Table of Contents
Engine and Mechanical Systems
Your engine is the heart of your boat. After months of sitting, it needs attention before hitting the water.
- Change engine oil and filter
- Replace fuel/water separator filter
- Inspect and replace spark plugs if needed
- Check all belts and hoses for cracking or wear
- Inspect the propeller for dings, cracks, or fishing line wrap
- Test the battery — charge or replace if voltage is low
Fuel System
Fuel that sat over the winter can cause problems. If you didn't add stabilizer in the fall, you may need to drain old fuel.
- Inspect fuel lines for cracks or soft spots
- Check fuel tank connections for leaks
- Replace fuel filters
- Fill the tank with fresh fuel and add stabilizer if needed
Electrical Systems
Water and electricity don't mix, so your electrical system deserves careful inspection.
- Test all navigation lights and replace burnt bulbs
- Check bilge pump operation
- Test the horn and all switches
- Inspect wiring for corrosion or damage
- Update electronics firmware if available
Hull and Exterior
The hull is your first line of defense against the water. Give it a thorough inspection.
- Inspect the hull for cracks, blisters, or damage
- Clean and wax the gelcoat
- Check and replace zinc anodes if corroded
- Inspect the drain plug — replace the gasket if worn
- Clean and condition vinyl seating
- Check the bimini top and canvas for tears or mildew
Safety Equipment
Safety should never be an afterthought. Make sure all required equipment is aboard and in good condition.
- Verify life jackets are in good condition and properly sized
- Check fire extinguisher expiration dates
- Inspect flares and replace if expired
- Test throwable flotation device
- Verify first aid kit is stocked
- Check the anchor and rode for wear
Trailer Inspection
Don't forget about the trailer — it's what gets your boat to the water safely.
- Check tire pressure and inspect for dry rot or cracking
- Grease wheel bearings
- Test all trailer lights and turn signals
- Inspect the winch strap and safety chains
- Check the tongue jack and coupler operation
